The first test of Annerley Community Hub's idea to bring a Community Café to Annerley in the afternoons was road tested in a Pop Up café scenario. 60-70 people turned out to enjoy Barista-style coffee, tea, scones with jam and cream and other sweet treats. We had people from all walks of life at the event including locals, people from the Annerley Stephens History Group, Councillor Nicole Johnston and our special guests from the Annerley Baptist Church. The ABC were so gracious in donating the use of the space and their time to come down and check out the idea, drink some coffee and tea and each scones with jam and cream together with the rest of the community. This was a really excellent example of how individuals and multiple community centres can work together to achieve goals in each locality. With the help of Yeronga Community Centre (and the Scone Queens), we were able to use their professional coffee machine, locate coffee beans for a fractional price, use their kitchen to bake scones and had a volunteer from their centre to make professional coffees. The cafe was a huge success and the whole neighbourhood is asking when the next one will be held. Hopefully this will become a more permanent fixture in Annerley in the future.
