Annerley is an awesome Southern suburb of Brisbane which has a thriving community, great retailers and excellent vibe.

Annerley Junction Jumble Sale

This year we're doing it all again with a fun-filled day of sales, sunshine and smiles at the annual Annerley Junction Jumble Sale.

Each year we hold this great community event where traders and community members come together to bring back Annerley Junction to the glory days when it was a bustling shopping district. Each year, these events bolster the centre and the buzz continues on for months before and after.

Loads of delicious foods will be available on the day with a sausage sizzle, bake sale, cold pressed coffees and all our local cafes open for business: Groove Cafe and Dudley Street Espresso along with new kids on the block, Little Clive and The Annerley Kitchen.

Some fun kids activities will be held down the arcade where you'll also find some lovely shops and hair salons to browse and explore.

Come along and enjoy the fun-filled atmosphere among the yarn-bombed trees, planters and light poles!

Top 5 Reasons to live in Annerley

Why do you live in Annerley? Perhaps you love that it's only 10 mins drive to the city through traffic, or that it has some of the best kept secret cafes in Brisbane?

Whatever your reasons for loving living here, you can add these 5 to your list!

1. Community

In days gone past, Annerley was a thriving and bustling neighbourhood where people came together to shop and meet on the street at Annerley Junction. Around 10 years ago, the suburb saw some decline with the advent of larger shopping centres close by to the suburb.

When shop windows were empty, locals took matters into their own hands and made efforts to fill each shop with independent businesses. They also banded together for social projects including yarn-bombing and decorating the strip, holding community events and forming small organisations and groups for neighbours to meet and enjoy various pursuits.

There is now a community centre where there wasn't before due to the sheer will of the people. On Wednesday nights you might find locals at the Annerley Town Hall meetings or the Junction Yarn Jammers chatting about the area and what they can do to make it even more special.

People feel empowered, look after one another and want everyone in Annerley to feel welcome and part of the community.

2. Independant Businesses

Whether you need some clothes take in, or want to purchase a gift for a friend, you will find the right service or product in Annerley. With so many small businesses thriving together, there is a unique quality to the streetscape in this busy shopping district.

There is a wide range of shops to visit with Southside Antiques and the Peter Baker Finch Centre being the stalwarts of the area and looking after your antique and gift buying needs respectively. New kids on the block, Voodoo Rabbit and Our Lady of Saintly Salvage can hook you up with some great fabrics or vintage handmade creations and you'll never walk away empty-handed from Ace Comics or Fats Comics if you're a lover of the genre.

3. Street Art

Most aren't so keen on getting their front fence tagged by a rogue vandal but Annerley has a great crew of 'street artists' who cover over bad tagging and create beautiful murals by commission. Works can be found all over the neighbourhood with some recent paste-ups added by our creative workshop participants.

You can find a variety of beautiful artworks on the streets of Annerley - comment below if you've found something amazing that you'd like to share!

4. History

The Annerley Stephens History Group is still in it's infancy but the dedicated people who are seeking out information about our local history have uncovered many amazing things about Annerley and the surrounding suburbs.

Some tidbits of info include that the Junction Hotel was first built around 1866 and seemed to service the farmers around the local area.

Digby Denham, the former Premier of Queensland named Annerley after his hometown in England, Annerly. This also lead to the renaming of the old Boggo Road to Annerley Road when he built his house on the corner of this thoroughfare and the street now known as Denham St.

There are also great stories of local brothels and other macabre events and locations which are part of the area's rich and varied history. You can get involved by emailing or heading along to a meeting - the first Thursday of every month at 6:30pm in Annerley Community Hub.

5. Events

A few years ago, there was a dirth of activity in the Annerley Junction area. A few shopkeepers got together to have a Christmas market in December of 2012 to showcase the wonderful retail spaces and services that the suburb had to offer.

Around 1000 people turned up to that first event which made way for the Junction Jumble sale in July 2013 which attracted many more to an event where shops cleaned out their backrooms and had bargains for sale on the footpath for the day.

With over 8 of these regular events under their belts, the strip now sees around 1000 visitors each time the events are held. This is what our community is about - that spirit of coming together to enjoy our suburb and have a great time.
